Tucson Considers Adopting “Science City” Brand

The Arizona Daily Star (4/3/2011, Beal) reported University of Arizona Dean of Science Joaquin Ruiz wants the city of Tucson to adopt “Science City” as its brand, noting that UA’s high volume of research science has positive effects for “the larger economic community…in the form of research contracts with area businesses, companies spun off from university research projects, and jobs.” University research also draws government contractors and “technology-heavy industries” to the area, he said, and improving the city’s brand image would only increase the reciprocal benefits. Engineering Dean Jeff Goldberg agreed, saying, “With places like Raytheon and Honeywell, it’s not coming to them for philanthropy, it’s ‘How does the College of Engineering help them build their businesses relative to the mission we have?'” The city and its business community are continuing to debate the merits of a “Science City” brand over alternatives.
